Belgian industry faces growing pressure from volatile energy prices, grid congestion, electrification needs and ambitious decarbonisation targets. Through GALILEO, EnergyVille and its industrial partners are taking a practical approach to understand how much energy flexibility already exists within industry and what prevents companies from unlocking it.
Working closely with Tessenderlo Group, Nyrstar, Aperam, Tiense Suiker and LCL Data Centres, the project identified more than 80 barriers spanning technology, investment, regulation and internal organisation. These findings highlight that unlocking industrial flexibility requires looking beyond technical potential and considering the operational realities faced by companies.
Building on these insights, GALILEO is now exploring practical solutions, including battery storage, electrification, flexible heat demand and participation in energy markets, with the longer-term goal of translating the findings into guidance for industry and policymakers.
