On December 1, the GALILEO project partners came together for a consortium meeting hosted by Tiense Suiker at their sugar production plant in Tienen. It was a packed and productive day, bringing all partners around the table to share progress, discuss upcoming work, and connect the big-picture goals with what’s happening on the ground at industrial sites across Belgium.
The day started with a presentation of the results from our first work package, which explored how much flexibility Belgian industry can offer and what barriers still need to be overcome. We also heard updates from the teams working on energy market models and got an indepth look at how our industrial partners (Aperam, Nyrstar, Tessenderlo Group, LCL, and Tiense Suiker) are planning to test flexibility in real factory settings.
The highlight of the day was a behind-the-scenes tour of the beet sugar production process, giving partners a firsthand look at one of the project’s use cases in action. With the first phase of work complete, GALILEO is moving full speed ahead into modeling, testing, and preparing recommendations to help make Belgium’s industry more flexible and future-ready. Thanks again to Tiense Suiker for the warm welcome and to all partners for the great collaboration.
